Phillips Park Bridge Replacement

Greene County, OH

A permanent, maintenance-free bridge solution to connect three county parks.

In 2012, flooding and erosion forced the Greene County Parks to replace a wooden bridge that connects Rotary Park, Philips Park, and the Beavercreek Wetlands Preserve. The Park Service contracted Axcess to design a permanent solution for this location that would not need to be replaced in the future. Project requirements included:

  • Higher Elevation. The bridge needed to be above the flood plain.
  • Durability. Based on their previous poor experience with treated lumber, the Park wanted to use durable, solid surface decking.
  • Maintenance Free. The Park Service’s budget for annual maintenance was limited.
  • Truss Bridge. The Park Service preferred the visual effect of a truss bridge for this location.

To meet these requirements, Axcess designed a weathering steel truss bridge with a solid surface fiberglass deck. The design work included raising the bridge’s elevation so it sat above the flood plain, improving access and reducing water damage. This maintenance-free solution saves on upkeep costs for the Park Service and will last for years to come.
